The media’s job, first and foremost, is to represent the public. Fox News notwithstanding, MSNBC notwithstanding, selling advertising notwithstanding, the reason the media is given a special constitutional protection is because it is supposed to represent the public. It is supposed to put the public’s interest above all else, regardless of political affiliation…(and so I dream…)With regard to the BP catastrophe, the media has failed, and it has failed miserably, utterly and inexorably. I ask you this, public: if George Bush were president, how much would we be hearing about the BP disaster? How much would we be hearing about how a Republican anti-environment capitalist president wasn’t focusing enough attention on a disaster of Biblical, 2012 proportions? How much would the press be yelling “Do SOMETHING!”, “Where is the Army Corp of Engineers!” and other, VERY APPROPRIATE questions? But Obama has gotten a free pass. The love-smitten press, still very much like the still star-struck young maiden overlooking the obvious flaws of her new paramour, continues to ignore the severity of the BP catastrophe and has grossly under-reported it in all aspects. Why? Again, if this were Bush, is there any doubt he would be blamed? Katrina took the head of the FEMA czar-and rightfully so, as a public official that miserably fails in his duties should. BPI Certification . Where is the head of Obama’s czar? WHO is the czar in charge of this!!How would we even know! The press has even failed to deliver this to us.Again, I ask why? Is it because the negative reporting on this can only reflect poorly on Obama? Is it because of the media’s love for him? Or perhaps something more sinister, like an election-year conspiracy to keep bad news for the Dems to a minimum? In either case, the press is failing us. Their duty in representing the public is to keep our elected officials in check. This includes reporting the news…very simple, right!! By exposing what is going on, elected officials have no choice but to address the issues. If the press doesn’t address an issue, then our legislators and president doesn’t have to, either.Again, if W were still president, the press would be all over this, as it was with Katrina, forcing Bush to devote the appropriate amount of resources. Instead, because the press doesn’t want O to look bad-for whatever reason, and frankly, I don’t care-they have under-reported this catastrophe, and Obama has had to do nothing. simony . elephant . In one case, the media’s hate for W helped get things done, in the other, the media’s love of Obama has failed to get things done.Ironic, huh?The media has failed. It needs to simply do its job without bias. Then it will be doing its duty.Until then, the media will continue to betray us.
